Level 42 est un groupe de pop-funk formé dans les années 1980 par des natifs de l'île de Wight, Mark King (basse) et Phil Gould (batterie), joints par Mike Lindup (claviers) et à la guitare, Dominique Miller à l'origine, ensuite remplacé par Boon Gould.

Mark King a développé le style très particulier de "slapping bass" inventé par les légendaires Larry Graham, Louis Johnson et Stanley Clarke. Mark King en fit un véritable "mur de son": le groupe était initialement jazz-rock, sous l'influence particulière de John McLaughlin et Return to Forever. Le groupe était réputé de haut calibre instrumental, augmenté de l'unique combinaison entre la voix de Mark King (en lead la plupart du temps) et le falsetto de Mike Lindup.

Level 42 est également considéré comme l'un des pionniers du mouvement « brit-funk » avec Imagination.

Succès international

Après les premiers succès en 1981 avec des albums et singles plutôt Jazz-Funk, (Love meeting Love ou Love Games), Level 42 a opté pour une orientation plus commerciale, et connut un succès planétaire entre 1985 et 1987 avec les albums World Machine et Running in the Family et leurs tubes Something about you (1985), Running in the Family (1987) et surtout Lessons in love, ce dernier morceau étant le plus gros hit international que le groupe ait connu, en 1986/87 ; couronnant leurs premières co-production avec Wally Badarou, fidèle partenaire depuis les premiers instants, aujourd'hui considéré comme le 5ème membre 'non-officiel' du groupe.

Déclin progressif

A cette époque, Level 42 occupe donc les premières places des charts en Grande-Bretagne et dans le monde. Cependant, après d'harassantes tournées mondiales et les désaccords croissants entre Mark et Phil sur la direction du groupe, ce dernier le quitte en 1987, ainsi que son frère Boon. Phil enregistre néanmoins un dernier album avec le groupe, Forever Now en 1994, mais le quitte définitivement au début de la tournée de promotion. De moins en moins de succès en ces années 1990, additionnés à de nombreux changements de personnel, conduisent à la progressive cessation de Level 42 vers 1998.

Après quelques expériences en solo, Mark rachète les droits associés au nom et remets en marche le groupe en 2001; il est à nouveau rejoint par Mike en 2006.

Quant au nom du groupe, le « 42 » viendrait de la grande question sur la vie, l'univers et le reste, telle qu'imaginée par Douglas Adams dans le guide du routard galactique.
