L’angora est la fibre de laine provenant du poil de yack, de mouton angora ou de lapin angora[1].
Son nom est l'ancienne forme de celui de la ville turque d'Ankara.
Lapin angora
Les différentes races de lapins angoras ont un pelage fourni contitué de poils longs. Il peuvent être gris clair, roux ou blancs (albinos)[1].
En période de mue, le lapin donne jusqu'à un kilo de poils par an. Si les poils sont épilés avec un peigne ils seront doux, brillants et d'une qualité supérieure que s'ils sont rasés[2].
Mutation du pelage
Outre les espèces destinées à fournir de la fibre, d'autres espèces ont été sélectionnées pour leur fourrure angora, comme le hamster doré, le chat angora turc, le furet angora...
La toison de la chèvre angora (Tibet, Afrique du Sud, etc.) est appelée mohair.
