John Buchan

John Buchan dit Lord Tweedsmuir C.P., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., C.H. (26 août 1875, Perth (Royaume-Uni) – 11 février 1940), 1er baron Tweedsmuir d'Elsfield, fils d'un pasteur calviniste, fut le quinzième gouverneur général du Canada, de 1935 à 1940. Également éditeur et écrivain, il est l'auteur de romans comme Les Trente-Neuf Marches.

Biographie

John Buchan commence sa carrière professionnelle comme avocat à Londres. Devenu secrétaire de Lord Milner, il l'accompagne en Afrique du Sud en pleine guerre des Boers qui oppose les Britanniques aux colons d'origine hollandaise durant deux ans et demi. Cette épreuve marquante aura des conséquences sur sa vie d'écrivain.

De retour à Londres, il travaille dans l'édition, chez Nelson. En 1915, il se lance dans le journalisme qui correspond mieux à son tempérament et à son désir de témoigner de la vie et de la souffrance des hommes. Il «couvre» la Première Guerre mondiale pour le Times.

En 1916, il entre dans les services secrets britanniques et opte pour une carrière plus discrète mais dangereuse et active.

Parallèlement à ses activités professionnelles et politiques, il écrit de nombreux livres. Il publie des biographies (Walter Scott, Olivier Cromwell et Jules César), des essais (sur l'église d'Écosse et les colonies britanniques en Afrique), des textes autobiographiques et des romans d'espionnage : Les 39 Marches en 1915 (adapté au cinéma en 1935 par Alfred Hitchcock), où apparaît pour la première fois le personnage de Richard Hannay, La Centrale d'énergie en 1916, Les Trois Otages en 1928, ou encore Le Prêtre Jean.

En 1927, John Buchan est élu au Parlement. En 1935, il est nommé gouverneur général du Canada, où il meurt accidentellement le 11 février 1940. Il sera remplacé par Lyman Poore Duff, le juge en chef de la Cour suprême du Canada qui agira comme administrateur du gouvernement.
