La luminescence est une émission de lumière dite « froide » par opposition à l'incandescence qui elle est dite « chaude » : toute lumière est produite par le retour vers un état de moindre énergie des électrons excités et on parle de luminescence quand le mode d'excitation n'est pas le chauffage.

Quand l'émission de lumière suit l'excitation, on parle de fluorescence (de 10-9 à 10-6 secondes pour la majorité des molécules organiques) ; quand le délai est plus long, on parle de phosphorescence (de 10-3 à 10 s. pour les molécules organiques couramment rencontrées)[1].

Historique

Le terme luminescence fut inventé par le physicien allemand G.H. Wiedemann en 1888 à partir du mot latin lumen, signifiant lumière. Si le phénomène est connu depuis l'Antiquité et à travers différentes civilisations, il faudra attendre les travaux de J.F.W. Herschel, E. Becquerel et G.G. Stokes au milieu du XIXe s. pour tenter de répondre sur l'origine du phénomène de manière scientifique. Il faudra ensuite attendre les années 1920-30, pour distinguer de façon concrète la fluorescence de la phosphorescence avec l'introduction du diagramme de Jabłoński par le physicien polonais Aleksander Jabłoński.
