Margaret Mitchell est née à Atlanta, Géorgie dans une famille sudiste. Son seul et unique roman Autant en emporte le vent (Gone with the wind en anglais) fut écrit en trois ans d'un travail ininterrompu. Il fut inspiré d'une de ses ancêtres ayant vécu la guerre de sécession.

Indépendante, la jeune fille grandit dans une famille de soldats, bercée par les récits des anciens confédérés sur la guerre civile américaine. Devenue journaliste pour l'Atlanta Journal Magazine, le futur écrivain doit cependant composer avec une vie sentimentale tumultueuse, partagée entre deux hommes qu'elle finira par épouser à deux ans d'intervalle. Victime d'un accident de voiture, Margaret Mitchell décède dix ans après l'adaptation de son livre au cinéma en laissant derrière elle l'une des plus belles histoires d'amour de la littérature. Il semblerait aussi que le personnage de Rhett Butler ait été inspiré par son ex-mari qui la maltraitait et la brutalisait. En 1916, elle avait écrit un texte, Last Laysen, dont l'original du manuscrit, récemment retrouvé, est estimé entre 70 000 et 90 000 dollars.

Le 11 août 1949, après avoir été percutée par un chauffeur de taxi qui conduisait sa voiture personnelle, elle tombe dans le coma. Elle décède cinq jours plus tard au Grady Memorial Hospital.
