Mary Ewing Outerbridge (9 mars 1852 à Philadelphie – 3 mai 1886 à Staten Island) est, sinon la toute première joueuse américaine de tennis, du moins l'importatrice reconnue de ce sport en 1874 aux États-Unis.
Biographie
Début 1874, année de l'invention du lawn tennis par le Gallois Walter Clopton Wingfield, Mary Ewing Outerbridge découvre ce sport pendant ses vacances aux Bermudes, en voyant s'exercer des officiers de la British Army. Après avoir appris les règles du jeu et quelques rudiments techniques, elle rentre aux États-Unis où, avec son frère cadet Eugenius et des amis, elle dispute à Staten Island (dans l'État de New York), sur un court de forme approximative, le premier match de tennis sur le sol US.
Surnommée the Mother of Tennis (la mère du tennis), elle est décédée en 1886, cinq ans après l'édition masculine inaugurale des Internationaux des États-Unis à Newport – et un an avant la première édition féminine.
Mary Ewing Outerbridge est membre du International Tennis Hall of Fame depuis 1981.
