Maîtrise en arts

La maîtrise en arts ou maîtrise ès arts est une catégorie de maîtrise existant dans de nombreux pays, en particulier les pays de tradition universitaire anglosaxonne (Mastership in Art ou Master's degree in Arts en anglais). Il désignait également le principal grade universitaire dans l'ancienne université de Paris, sur laquelle les universités anglo-saxonnes ont pris modèle.

Le titulaire d'une maîtrise en arts porte le titre de maître en arts ou maître ès arts (abrégé M.A., on peut également trouver l'abréviation MA ou AM ou encore A.M.) qui provient de l'expression latine Magister Artium.

Maîtrise ès Arts en France

En France, la maîtrise ès Arts était le grade terminal des études à la Faculté des Arts (voir par exemple Faculté des Arts de Paris). L'âge minimum pour devenir maître ès Arts était de 21 ans. Le maître ès arts devenait alors membre de la Faculté des arts.
