Le Matilda est un char d'assaut britannique de 24 tonnes dont la production débuta en 1937 dans les fonderies Vulcan. Pas moins de 2 987 chars sortent de ces fonderies jusqu'en août 1943, date d'arrêt de la production.

Jusqu'en 1941 il est le char le plus blindé en service, mais ce blindage diminue considérablement sa mobilité. Son canon de 40 mm n'en fait pas le char le plus puissant de cette époque.

Il fut très présent en Afrique du Nord notamment. La seconde bataille d'El Alamein, en octobre 1942, sonna la fin de son utilisation en tant que char d'assaut. Des exemplaires furent livrés à la Russie.

Il fut converti par la suite en char d'éclairage.
