Maurice Bloch

Maurice Bloch est un anthropologue britannique d'origine française. Il est né en 1939 à Caen. Son père est tué au cours de la guerre. Sa mère, biologiste marine et part ailleurs, nièce d’Émile Durkheim et cousine de Marcel Mauss, se remarie avec le biologiste britannique, John S. Kennedy. Il part alors en Angleterre à l'age de onze ans. Il étudie à la London School of Economics, puis à l'université de Cambridge où il obtient un doctorat en 1967. Il est professeur à la London School of Economics depuis 1968.

De 1983 à 2005, il a occupé la chaire d'anthropologie de la LSE qui fut auparavant celle de Bronislaw Malinowski.

Il a été titulaire de la chaire européenne du Collège de France pour l'année 2005-2006 (son cours s'intitulait « L'anthropologie cognitive à l'épreuve du terrain. L'exemple de la théorie de l'esprit »).

Ses recherches portent actuellement sur l'anthropologie cognitive dont il est l'un des initiateurs. Dans ses travaux précédents, il s'est intéressé notamment à l'anthropologie marxiste, à la mort et aux rites funèbres.
