Un micromètre (symbole μm) vaut 10-6 m = 0, 000 001 mètre = 0, 001 millimètre.
On utilisait auparavant le nom micron ; il a été retiré du système international en 1968, mais est toujours très usité de nos jours. Le symbole qu’il utilisait (µ) est maintenant réservé pour le préfixe SI « micro ».
