Middle Stone Age

L'expression anglaise « Middle Stone Age », fréquemment abréviée en MSA, désigne la grande étape de la Préhistoire africaine qui succède au Early Stone Age et qui précède le Later Stone Age.

Elle correspond à peu près au Paléolithique moyen européen même si elle débute avec des industries attribuées à l'Acheuléen final (environ - 200 000 ans BP) et si elle s'achève avec des équivalents africains du Paléolithique supérieur européen (environ - 30 000 ans BP).

Les sites de Blombos et de Diepkloof en Afrique du Sud ont livré d'importantes séquences riches en industries du MSA, représentées notamment par le faciès Stillbay dans le premier, les faciès Stillbay et Howiesons Poort dans le second.
