Appomattox est une ville de Virginie, à l'est de Lynchburg.

En 1865, le général Robert Lee s'y retire après la défaite du siège de Petersburg et l'incendie de Richmond. Robert Lee signe sa reddition à Ulysses Grant et met fin de ce fait à la guerre de Sécession, même si quelques généraux comme Kirby Smith se rendront le 2 juin 1865.
