Jason Newsted, né le 4 mars 1963 à Battle Creek dans le Michigan, est un bassiste de rock américain, connu pour avoir été membre de Metallica de 1987 à 2002.

Biographie

Étant fan du bassiste de Kiss, il s'essaya à la 4 cordes avant de l'abandonner. Quelques années plus tard, il reçut une basse et se remit à l'instrument.

Après la mort accidentelle de Cliff Burton, Metallica se mit à la recherche d'un nouveau bassiste. Newsted, qui faisait alors partie du groupe Flotsam and Jetsam, apprit tout leur répertoire en quelques jours dans l'espoir de devenir le bassiste de son groupe préféré. La légende dit que lors des auditions pour rentrer dans Metallica, James lui demanda de choisir un morceau et de le jouer: Jason lui répondit de choisir lui-même !

Il enregistra Garage Days Re-Revisited (édition limitée), ...And Justice For All, Metallica (Black Album), Load, ReLoad, Garage Inc. et le grand concert S&M avec l'orchestre symphonique de San Francisco. En 2001, il quitta le groupe et Bob Rock, producteur du groupe, assura dans un premier temps l'intérim du poste de bassiste (c'est d'ailleurs Bob Rock qui joue sur l'album St Anger). En 2003, Metallica engagea Robert Trujillo comme bassiste.

Lorsque Jason quitta Metallica, il créa un groupe nommé "Echobrain" qui eut un succès fulgurant mais bref. En 2002, il rejoint le groupe québécois Voivod.

Il est également à noter que lorsque Robert Trujillo fut engagé par Metallica, Newsted fut engagé par Ozzy Osbourne.

Jason participe en 2009 a un live a l'occasion de l'intronisation de Metallica au Rock'n Roll all of Fame
