Nomina sacra

Nomina sacra (au singulier : nomen sacrum) signifie "noms sacrés" en Latin.

Ce terme désiqne les traditions d'abréviation pour l'écriture de noms de Dieu ou de titres fréquemment utilisés dans l'écriture sacrée en grec ancien. Le livre de Bru Metzger Manuscripts of the Greek Bible recense 15 Nomina sacra dans les papyri grecs : les termes grecs signifiant Dieu, Seigneur, Jésus, Christ, Fils, Esprit, David, croix, Marie, Père, Israël, Sauveur, Homme, Jérusalem, et ciel. Les abréviations étaient écrites avec des surlignages.

Il existe une controverse pour savoir si ces nomina sacra étaient des solutions de facilité ou si elles ont un caractère sacré[1] ou encore s'il s'agit d'ancêtres des textos.

IHS ou JHS christogramme de la chrétienté occidentale

Utilisés au IIIe siècle les nomina sacra étaient parfois raccourcies par contraction en inscriptions chrétiennes qui résultaient de séquences de lettres grecques comme IH (iota-eta), IC (iota-sigma), ou IHC (iota-eta-sigma) pour Jésus (en grec Iēsous), et XC (chi-sigma), XP (chi-ro) et XPC (chi-rho-sigma) pour Christ (en grec Christos). Ici "C" représente la forme médiévale "lunate" du sigma grec; sigma peut aussi être transcrit phonétiquement en alphabet latin ce qui donne IHS et XPS.
