H. Norman Schwarzkopf, né le 22 août 1934 à Trenton (New Jersey), est un général quatre étoiles à la retraite de l'US Army depuis août 1991. Il était le commandant de l'United States Central Command et à ce titre, a dirigé les forces de la coalition lors de la guerre du golfe en 1991. Il affirmera, par la suite, son opposition à la Guerre d'Irak menée en 2003[1].

Contrairement à certains dires, il ne serait pas un neveu de la cantatrice Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, car elle était fille unique.

Enfance et formation

Schwarzkopf est né à Trenton, New Jersey, le fils de Ruth Alice (née Bowman) et de Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf[2]. Son père, après son service dans l'U.S. Army, est devenu le superintendant de la New Jersey State Police, ou la police d'État de New Jersey, où, l'enquêteur principal, il a travaillé sur l'enlèvement de Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Jr., avant de retourner dans l'armée où il a atteint le grade de major-général. En janvier 1952, le certificat de naissance de Schwarzkopf a été modifié pour que son nom devient “H. Norman Schwarzkopf”[3]. Ses liens avec la région du golfe Persique sont nés très tôt. En 1946, à l'âge de 12 ans, avec les autres membres de sa famille, il a rejoint son père qui était posté à Téhéran, en Iran, et qui deviendrait essentiel dans l'organisation de l'opération Ajax, et par la suite, la formation de la SAVAK, le service de sécurité intérieure et de renseignement de l'Iran. Il a été scolarisé dans le Community High School de Téhéran, et ensuite dans l'École internationale de Genève à La Châtaigneraie, avant de terminer son éducation à la Valley Forge Military Academy, en Pennsylvanie. Schwarzkopf est aussi un membre de la Mensa[4].

Après ses études à la Valley Forge Military Academy, Schwarzkopf, un enfant de militaire, est allé à l'Académie militaire de West Point, où il a fini ses études 43e dans sa classe en 1956, avec un diplôme de baccalauréat en sciences[5]. Il est aussi allé à l'université de Californie du Sud où il a obtenu sa maîtrise en sciences en génie mécanique en 1964. Il a étudié les missiles guidés, un programme que l’université de Californie du Sud soutenait en conjonction avec l'U.S. Army, qui comportait de l'entraînement aéronautique et mécanique. Schwarzkopf a aussi afit des études à l'U.S. Army War College, en Pennsylvanie.
