La Notation est le fait de représenter, de positionner ou de qualifier un élément à l'aide d'un symbole conventionnel .

Le recours au symbole permettant au lecteur d'associer immédiatement à l'élément "noté" une signification non équivoque et ce, pour l'une ou plusieurs des raisons suivantes :

  • Désigner, éventuellement en classifiant ou en codifiant
  • Abréger, faire court
  • Indiquer une position, faciliter un repérage spatial
  • Fournir une valeur, une information, une mesure d'ordre quantitatif ou qualitatif.

La nature et la syntaxe des symboles utilisés sont a priori illimités. La seule contrainte étant que le lecteur ciblé puisse la comprendre. Des normes publiques ou privées peuvent prévoir la signification des symboles employés. le rédacteur utilisant des symboles très spécifiques ou peu connus aura intérêt à expliquer la finalité, le mode de calcul ou de sélection de la notation qu'il utilise.
