Ntare V Charles Ndizeye, fils de Mwambutsa IV, roi du Burundi

Ntare V ou Charles Ndizeye déposa son père Mwambutsa IV le 8 juillet 1966 et proclame la république. Le 28 novembre 1966, le capitaine Michel Micombero, 26 ans, à son tour annonça via la radio, la chute de la monarchie et Michel Micombéro devient le premier président de la république du Burundi.

Jusqu'en 1972, la jeune armée burundaise est composée de hutus et de tutsis, depuis l'homme de troupe jusqu'aux officiers supérieurs.

Le 29 avril 1972, l'ex-roi Ntare V est assassiné, mettant fin à une descendance mâle, tandis qu'un soulèvement des groupes extrémistes hutus, accusés de vouloir exterminer tous les Tutsis, est réprimé avec une grande férocité, au prix du massacre de 100 000 à 200 000 personnes.
