Oliver Goldsmith

Oliver Goldsmith est un écrivain irlandais né à Elphin, Comté de Roscommon (Irlande) le 10 novembre 1728 et mort à Londres le 4 avril 1774.

Biographie

Romancier, poète, dramaturge et essayiste anglo-irlandais. Après des études de théologie et de droit à Trinity College Dublin (où il était connu pour faire la fête), il étudie la médecine à Édimbourg et Leyde, puis voyage en France, en Suisse et en Italie (1755-1756). Il s'installe à Londres où la pratique de son art le laisse impécunieux ; plusieurs autres professions ne lui réussissent pas non plus.

Il se lance dans les lettres en 1758 et fonde la revue L'Abeille en 1759. Membre fondateur du Club (1765) de Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith publie les Lettres chinoises (imitées des Lettres persanes) en 1762, puis Le Voyageur (1764), poème qui le rend assez célèbre pour qu'il puisse faire paraître un roman écrit en 1761-1762, Le Ministre de Wakefield (souvent traduit sous le titre Le Vicaire de Wakefield, 1766), son chef-d'œuvre. Le succès est lent à venir, mais il dure encore. C'est un roman de famille en même temps qu'un roman d'introspection. Son sentimentalisme, délivré du puritanisme, est humain, humanitaire, éthique même, et pourra mener au romantisme ; son réalisme est psychologique autant que social ; son style admirablement adapté aux aventures domestiques qu'il anime de son ironie charitable, de sa bonhomie clairvoyante. En 1768, il s'essaie au théâtre avec la pièce L'Homme au bon naturel, qui est un succès, de même que sa seconde pièce, Elle s'abaisse pour vaincre (1773). Il revient aussi à la poésie avec Le Village abandonné en 1770.

Il fait partie du Literary Club, fondé par Samuel Johnson et Joshua Reynolds.

Il est enterré à l'Abbaye de Westminster à Londres, au « coin des poètes ».
