Lampes des Valar
En l'an 1500 des Valar, Aulë, aidé par Manwë et Varda, entreprit la construction de deux lampes gigantesques destinées à illuminer Arda.
Au nord de la Terre du Milieu fut placée Illuin et au sud, Ormal. A l'emplacement où leur lumière se mêlait, sur l'île d'Almaren, les Valar firent résidence et ce, jusqu'au retour de Melkor.
Durant plusieurs siècles, ces lampes permirent aux végétaux de croître et aux animaux d'apparaître, mais en l'an 3450 des Valar, Melkor jeta bas les deux lampes. Il détruisit les deux colonnes qui portaient les lampes, ce qui eut pour effet de détruire les continents. A l'endroit où Illuin tomba, il se forma la Mer Intérieure d'Helcar.
