Overdub

L'overdubbing ou enregistrement fractionné est une technique utilisée par les studios d'enregistrement qui consiste à ajouter des sons à des prises de son précédemment enregistrées. Plusieurs appellations désignent cette technique, par exemple superimposition et re-recording ou re-re.

Le développement de l'enregistrement multipistes à partir du début des années 1960 (2 pistes, puis 4 pistes, puis 8, 16 pistes etc... jusqu'à aujourd'hui, où le numérique offre des possibilités illimitées) a radicalement modifié les techniques d'enregistrement. Dans le rock, Les prises live ont progressivement été remplacées par des enregistrements fractionnés, consistant souvent à commencer par une prise rythmique de base (par exemple basse-batterie-guitare), et à y ajouter au fur et à mesure les voix et d'autres instruments par couches successives.
