Les Pachtounes (pachtou : پښتون ; persan : پختون ; ourdou : پشتون) ou Pathan, (ourdou : پٹھان, hindi : पठान paṭhān) ou khan, sont un peuple indo-européen de plusieurs tribus nomades dont la plus importante fraction réside en Afghanistan et au Pakistan.

Autrefois, l'ensemble de cette ethnie voyageait, ou plutôt transhumait du Nord-Est de l'Iran aux portes de l'Inde et de la Chine, et ce chaque année. De nos jours, les frontières apportent évidemment leur lot de contraintes et leurs transhumances se font plus courtes, et certains se sédentarisent. En Afghanistan les pachtounes sont l'ethnie majoritaire qui constituent plus de 60% de la population totale de l'Afghanistan, ce sont les fondateurs de l'Afghanistan avec Ahmad Shah Durrani en 1747, ils sont les afghans de souche car le mot afghan est synonyme du mot pachtoune.l'hymne national de l'afghanistan est en langue pachto le "milli tarana" voté et approuvé par le parlement afghan qui a une assemblée nationale qui est le 'wolssi jirga' et le senat qui est le 'mechrano jirga' a la majorité absolu en 2004.

Les pachtounes parlent le pachto,une langue indo-européenne officielle qui est aussi la langue de la diplomatie et administratif de l'Afghanistan. Ils ont une histoire très ancienne et mouvementée,ils ont pu montrer leur influences a travers différentes périodes de l'histoire notamment avec l'empire moghol, perse, khorasan ou d'autres.

Les pachtounes sont environ 45 millions à travers le monde ; ils sont musulmans sunnites hanafites. La diaspora pachtoune s'est répandue dans le monde comme aux États-Unis, en Europe et en Australie.

En Afghanistan la majorité des personnalités politiques, artistiques, intellectuelles, scientifiques, populaires sont pachtounes. Le président Hamid Karzai est élu Homme le plus chic du monde en 2005. La femme pachtoune est représentée par "sharbat gula" dans le national geographic 1985. Les voix pachtounes de Farhad Darya et Zarsanga sont écoutées par les afghans du monde entier. Des pachtounes en Inde comme Shahrukh Khan, Amir Khan, Salman Khan, ou le réalisateur Kader Khan, sont connus. Les politiciens pachtounes connus sont Zalmay Khalilzad, ambassadeur des États-Unis auprès des Nations Unies. Abdul Ahad Mohmand fut le premier musulman à aller dans l'espace. Le mollah Mohammad Omar, chef des taliban est pachtoune,Parmi les autres personnalités :l'ex-roi Zaher Shah, Mohammed Nadjibullah, Babrak Karmal, Mohammed Daoud Khan,ahmad shah durrani,khan abdul ghafar khan,khoshal khan khattak,wazir akbar khan...

La ligne Durand qui coupe les territoires pachtounes entre l'Afghanistan et le Pakistan depuis 1893 présente un conflit majeur entre les deux pays, c'est pourquoi cette région est victime d'une instabilité permanente ; en effet les territoires pachtounes sont divisés par un officier Britannique en 1893 pour 100 ans entre l'Afghanistan et le Pakistan qui était une ancienne colonie anglaise, et depuis 1993, la fin de cette division, le Pakistan ne veut pas rendre les territoires pachtounes occupés.
