Photophore (du grec phôs, phôtos signifiant lumière et pherein signifiant porter) signifie porte-lumière.
- En zoologie, un photophore est un organe électroluminescent présent chez divers animaux marins, y compris des poissons et des céphalopodes. L'organe peut être simple ou aussi complexe que l'œil humain, c'est-à-dire équipé d'objectifs, d'obturateurs, de filtres de couleur et de réflecteurs. La lumière peut être produite à partir des composés produits pendant la digestion. Les caractéristiques des photophores sont importantes dans l'identification des poissons benthiques. Les photophores des poissons des grandes profondeurs ont pour fonction d'attirer les proies ou d'effrayer les prédateurs.
- En optique, un photophore est un élément capable de capter la lumière et de la renvoyer dans une direction déterminée. Des assemblages de lentilles concaves sur une surface réfléchissante constituent d'excellents photophores, dénommés aussi catadioptres.
