Pornography est le quatrième album studio du groupe anglais The Cure, sorti en 1982, qui le fit entrer dans le Top 10 britannique malgré son atmosphère désenchantée et jugée difficile d'accès[2]. Pour certains critiques, « la basse grave de Simon Gallup, mêlée à la batterie monotone de Lol Tolhurst, et la voix impassible de Robert Smith composent la bande son idéale pour tout amateur de rock gothique »[2]. La réédition remasterisée sortie en avril 2005 contient des titres inédits, et l'édition Deluxe est agrémentée d'un second disque comprenant des démos et des morceaux enregistrés en concert.

Historique

Cet album est considéré comme le plus sombre et triste du groupe, tout en représentant la marque de fabrique de The Cure (alors à l'apogée de sa période "noire"), faisant de cet album une œuvre plus qu'appréciée par les fans. La noirceur est aussi présente dans la musique et les arrangements que dans les paroles qui ne font preuve d'aucune légèreté ; le propos étant désespéré, triste et sombre. Le disque débute d'ailleurs par cette phrase : "It doesn't matter if we all die" ("Ca n'a aucune importance si nous mourons tous"). Cependant, il se termine par : "I have to fight this sickness, find a cure" ("Il faut que je combatte ce dégoût, que je trouve un remède") qui paraît presque "optimiste" au sortir de cet album claustrophobe et pesant de noirceur.

Pornography fut d'abord mal noté par le magazine Rolling Stone qui lui attribua un 2/5, ayant du mal à digérer son ambiance particulièrement oppressante. L'édition Deluxe a été renotée 4/5 et rétrospectivement l'album est défini comme une "étape importante pour le Rock gothique". Ce qui ne fit qu'exaspérer Robert Smith qui a systématiquement rejeté cette étiquette.

Pornography fut joué en live en entier ainsi que Disintegration et Bloodflowers au cours de deux concerts au Tempodrom de Berlin en novembre 2002. Ces deux concerts ont fait l'objet d'un enregistrement audio-vidéo intégral que l'on retrouve sur le double DVD intitulé Trilogy.
