Proof, né Deshaun Holton le 2 octobre 1973 à Détroit aux États-Unis et tué par balle à la sortie d'un bar le 11 avril 2006 à Détroit aux États-Unis, était un rappeur, membre fondateur du groupe D-12. Il était connu du grand public pour son amitié de longue date avec la star du rap Eminem. Au cours de sa carrière, il avait également collaboré avec des artistes comme Dr Dre, 50 cent, Gorillaz, Nate Dogg, Chino XL, Method Man ou Jay Dee.

Biographie

Les Débuts

Proof a commencé sa carrière à la fin des années 1980. Personnage central de la scène rap de Détroit, il animait les célèbres rencontres "Open Mic" du Hip-Hop Shop qui ont notamment permis de révéler Slum Village, Obie Trice, Royce da 5'9 et Eminem. Ce rôle central dans la scène rap de Detroit lui a valu le surnom de Hip Hop Mayor of Detroit. En 1990, il a également fondé le groupe D-12, avec ses proches Eminem, Bizarre puis The Kon Artis, Kuniva ...

Le succès

Proof était membre de D-12 qui a sorti deux albums ayant totalisé 8 millions d'exemplaires vendus dans le monde. Avec D12, Proof a collaboré avec des artistes comme Gorillaz, Tech9ne, Dr Dre, 50 cent, Obie Trice, B-Real de Cypress Hill, Tony Touch etc... Proof était également le backeur d'Eminem, épaulant le rappeur durant tous ses concerts. Il est par ailleurs apparu dans 2 films : 8 Mile et The Longest Yard. Fondateur du label Iron Fist, Proof a enregistré différents projets solos : il a enregistré l'album concept "Promatic" avec le rappeur Dogmatic, son album solo "Searching For Jerry Garcia" ou encore supervisé la compilation "Hand2Hand".

La mort de Proof

Alors qu'il venait de tirer dans la tête de son adversaire au billard, Keith Bender, suite à une altercation, Proof a été tué par le videur et cousin de Bender, le 11 avril 2006, dans le club CCC (Triple C), un club de Détroit situé sur la route 8 Mile[1],[2]. Cette nouvelle a choqué la communauté rap de Détroit qui voyait Proof comme un pionnier. Eminem a également été très affecté par la mort de celui qu'il considérait comme un mentor. "Sans Proof, il n'y aurait eu ni Slim Shady ni D12" a-t-il déclaré à la cérémonie funèbre. Il lui a d'ailleurs dédié une chanson Difficult où il raconte à quel point il tenait à lui et lui rend honneur avec You're Never Over de son album Recovery.

Les projets posthumes

Un couplet du rappeur (déjà connu) apparaît sur le projet "Eminem presents The Re-Up". La mixtape "Mayor Of Detroit" réalisée par Mixtape Assassin a permis aux fans de Proof de découvrir plusieurs morceaux inédits. Proof apparaît également sur deux titres inédits de la mixtape Return of The Dozen de son groupe D12. Eminem, son ami de longue date, lui rend hommage avec le titre Difficult, et plus récemment dans la chanson You're never over, extraite de son dernier album Recovery.
