  • Le qalam, un instrument d'écriture. C'est la transcription du mot arabe قلم qui signifie en arabe moderne crayon ou stylo. C'est aussi le nom du roseau taillé en pointe dont se servent encore les calligraphes arabes appelés calames en français. Tous les peuples de l'antiquité ont utilisé cet instrument de roseau: calamus en latin, καλαμος en grec; soit comme plume avec de l'encre soit comme instrument de gravure sur les tablettes d'argile ou de cire.
  • Al-Qalam, un concept religieux. « Al-Qalam » est le titre de la sourate LXVIII du Coran (« Le Calame »). Dans la religion musulmane « Le Qalam » est l'équivalent conceptuel du « Verbe » de l'Évangile de Jean. C'est le principe créateur dont tout émane.
