Le Royal Antwerp Football Club est un club belge de football situé à Anvers. Il évolue lors de la saison 2008-2009 en division 2.

Le Club

Fondé en 1880, avec la dénomination Antwerp Athletic Club, l'Antwerp Football Club fut l'un des cinq cercles fondateurs de l'Union Belge des Sociétés de Sports Athlétiques (future Union Royale Belge des Sociétés de Football Association) créée le 11 août 1895; affilié à l'Union Belge le 1er septembre 1895 sous le titre Antwerp Football Club avant de recevoir le 18 février 1920 le titre de Société Royale en s'appelant Royal Antwerp Football Club. Comme le plus ancien club de l'histoire du football belge, il reçut, en décembre 1926, le numéro matricule 1. En 1900, la plupart des joueurs quittèrent le club pour le Beerschot AC (futur numéro matricule 13), fondé le 1er février 1900. Le R. Antwerp FC est aussi le dernier club belge à avoir disputé une finale de Coupe Européenne (la Coupe d'Europe des vainqueurs de coupes) en 1993 perdant 3-1 contre Parme AC au Wembley Stadium. Il joue actuellement en championnat de seconde division de Belgique.

  • 1880 : fondation en 1880 de ANTWERP ATHLETIC CLUB, société multisport dont les membres pratiquaient indifféremment le rugby, le cricket, le tennis et le football (sans section de football structurée)
  • 1887 : constitution en 1887, au sein de Antwerp Athletic Club, de ANTWERP FOOTBALL CLUB section de football structurée (avec Secrétaire et Trésorier); un premier Président y fut nommé en 1889
  • 1892 : Antwerp Athletic Club est mis en faillite. Le 08/05/1892, ANTWERP FOOTBALL CLUB se constitue en société indépendante avant la création, le 11/05/1892, de ANTWERP CRICKET AND LAWN-TENNIS
  • 1893 : ANTWERP FOOTBALL CLUB et Antwerp Cricket and Lawn-Tennis partagent le même terrain de sports
  • 1894 : disparition de la pratique du cricket à Anvers. La section tennis rejoint ANTWERP FOOTBALL CLUB (elle en fait toujours partie aujourd'hui (2006))
  • 1895 : ANTWERP FOOTBALL CLUB est l'un des membres-fondateurs de l'Union Belge des Sociétés de Sports Athlétiques (future URBSFA), constituée à Bruxelles le 11/08/1895, et participe à son premier championnat (appelé Coupe des Equipes Premières) en 1895-1896
  • 1920 : après obtention du titre de Société Royale le 26/01/1920, changement de dénomination en ROYAL ANTWERP FOOTBALL CLUB le 18/02/1920
  • 1926 : reçoit le numéro matricule 1
  • 1928 : changement de dénomination de ROYAL ANTWERP FOOTBALL CLUB (1) en L'ANTWERP (1) (cette modification est expliquée par un conflit au sein du club : suivie par de nombreux titulaires de l'équipe première, une partie de la direction - propriétaire du stade du Bosuil (terrain du club) et de la dénomination officielle - avait fait le choix du football professionnel (refusé par l'URBSFA). Les dirigeants défenseurs de l'amateurisme constitutèrent, sous la dénomination L'ANTWERP, une équipe de jeunes joueurs (majoritairement juniors) pour la saison 1928-1929 de Division d'Honneur (D1) des championnats de Belgique. Cette équipe joua ses matches à domicile sur les terrains rivaux de ROYAL BEERSCHOT ATHLETIC CLUB (13) et BERCHEM SPORT (28) avant de devenir ...Championne de Belgique 1929. La réconciliation (et la "récupération" de la dénomination officielle) fut initiée par Alfred VERDYCK, entraîneur du club et Secrétaire Général de l'URBSFA)
  • 1929 : changement de dénomination de L'ANTWERP (1) en ROYAL ANTWERP FOOTBALL CLUB (1) le 13/02/1929
