Raymond William Stacy Burr, né le 21 mai 1917 à New Westminster, en Colombie-Britannique, Canada et décédé le 12 septembre 1993 à Sonoma, en Californie, est un acteur canadien. Il est surtout connu pour ses rôles dans les séries télés Perry Mason et L'Homme de fer.

Biographie

Ses parents, William Burr, négociant, et Minerva Smith Burr, pianiste et professeur de musique, divorcent alors qu'il est âgé de cinq ans (ils se remarient en 1955) et il part avec sa mère aux États-Unis, en Californie, où son grand-père paternel possède un hôtel. Il a une sœur, Géraldine Mary Fuller (née en 1920, décédée en 2001) et un frère, James Edmond Burr (né le 13 juillet 1921, décédé).

Il est envoyé à l'Académie militaire de San Rafaël mais doit la quitter alors qu'il n'a que 13 ans afin de subvenir aux besoins de sa famille, touchée par la Grande Dépression. Sa grande taille et sa carrure imposante lui permettent de trouver des petits boulots, habituellement réservés aux adultes, mais il fera aussi chanteur de cabaret. À 19 ans, il fait la connaissance du réalisateur Anatole Litvak qui lui permet de travailler pendant l'été dans le milieu du théâtre.

Engagé dans la US Navy pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Raymond Burr est blessé au bout de deux années puis rapatrié chez lui. Il commence alors de petits rôles à la radio puis au cinéma. Il sera révélé par le personnage de Lars Thorwald dans Fenêtre sur cour d'Alfred Hitchcock.

En 1955, Raymond Burr passe une audition pour le rôle d'Hamilton Burger, le district attorney des romans d'Erle Stanley Gardner. Ce dernier, présent à l'audition, reconnaîtra aussitôt en l'acteur celui qui doit jouer Perry Mason. La série est un succès.

En 1967, Raymond Burr débute une nouvelle série policière qui remportera un énorme succès : L'homme de Fer. Il incarnera ce rôle pendant huit années, puis à l'occasion d'un ultime téléfilm Le Retour de l'homme de fer, en 1993.

En 1977, Raymond Burr incarne R. B. Kingston, un magnat de la presse, dans la série Kingston : Confidential, mais cette dernière ne durera qu'une saison (15 épisodes).

Atteint d'un cancer du côlon qui va dégénérer, Raymond Burr finira sa vie dans un fauteuil roulant et s'éteindra le 12 septembre 1993, dans son ranch de Sonoma (Californie) non sans avoir tourné trois Perry Mason en plus du téléfilm Le Retour de l'homme de fer. Il vivait avec son ami et collègue, Robert Benevides, avec qui il a partagé 35 années de sa vie.

Mariages : Annette Sutherland en 1942 (décédée en 1943, un enfant : Michael Evan Burr, décédé en 1953), Isabella Ward en 1947 (divorcé), Andrina Laura Morgan en 1954 (décédée en 1955).

Son rôle de journaliste-enquêteur dans Godzilla (Japon 1954) consista en des scènes additionnelles destinées au nouveau montage du film pour sa sortie aux États-Unis, où l'œuvre du réalisateur Ishiro Honda fut, à l'époque, fortement censurée en raison de son message anti-nucléaire.
