Synopsis

Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) est écrivain, auteur de romans à succès. Il est par ailleurs atteint de troubles obsessionnels compulsifs, ce qui fait de lui un asocial. La seule personne qui semble le supporter, sans pour autant le ménager, est Carol Connelly (Helen Hunt), serveuse du restaurant dans lequel il a sa table attitrée. Suite à l'hospitalisation de son voisin Simon Bishop (Greg Kinnear), agressé chez lui, Melvin se trouve obligé de s'occuper du chien de celui-ci, Verdell. L'obligation de s'occuper à autre chose que lui-même va l'amener à nouer peu à peu des relations avec ses semblables et changer son mode de vie.
