Le ringgit, dont le code international ISO 4217 est MYR, est l'unité monétaire de la Malaisie. Il est divisé en 100 sen.
Jusqu'aux années 1990 la dénomination courante était dollar malais et le symbole « $ » ou « M$ » figurait sur les pièces et billets. Désormais l'appellation « ringgit » est favorisée et devenue officielle. L'abréviation courante utilisée en Malaisie est RM (du malais: ringgit malaysia).
Le ringgit a été lié depuis la crise financière asiatique de 1997 au cours du dollar des États-Unis, avec un taux de change fixé à 1 MYR = 0,26 USD. Depuis juillet 2005, l'ancrage au dollar des États-Unis a été abandonné au profit d'un flottement administré par la banque centrale au moyen d'un panier de devises.
Il existe des billets de 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, et 1 ringgit. Il existe également des pièces de 50 sen, 20 sen, 10 sen, 5 sen 2 sen et 1 sen.
Illustration ci-contre : Billet de 1 ringgit, le portrait est celui du premier « roi » de la Fédération de Malaisie. Cette fonction honorifique est occupée à tour de rôle par les sultans traditionnels des neuf États originels de la fédération et est effective pour une durée de cinq ans.
