Rodolfo Gonzales est un américain d'origine mexicaine d'abord boxeur puis poète et activiste politique. Il organise la première conférence des jeunes chicanos en mars 1969 et fut actif pour la défense des droits des hispaniques américains.

Gonzales est né à Denver dans le Colorado le 18 juin 1928 dans une famille modeste de neuf enfants. Il fut diplômé d'une école technique à l'âge de 16 ans. Il devint ensuite boxeur et il remporta un titre national amateur (Golden Gloves) en 1946. Il fut classé à la troisième place du classement des boxeurs de sa catégorie par le magazine Ring Magazine. Il se retira de ce sport en 1955 après 65 victoires, 9 défaites et un match nul[1]. Gonzales a été intégré dans le Colorado Sports Hall of Fame en 1988.

Dès 1968, il fut actif pour la défense des droits des hispaniques américains et en 1969, il organisa la première conférence des jeunes Chicanos. Il participa à la construction d'une école privée pour Chicanos (Escuela Tlatelolco). Il a également rédigé un poème « Yo Soy Joaquín » (Je suis Joaquin) et connu en anglais sous le nom « I Am Joaquin ». Il y donne sa vision du Chicano qui n'est ni un indien, ni un américain, ni un européen et ni un mexicain. Ce texte est un exemple parmi d'autres de son influence sur le mouvement Chicanos. Sa santé se dégrada à partir de 1995 et il décéda le 12 avril 2005 parmi les siens et sa famille[2].
