Ronald Knox

Ronald Knox ou Ronald Arbuthnott Knox (1888-1957), fils d'un évêque anglican, se convertit au catholicisme et devint lui-même prêtre, puis protonotaire apostolique.

Biographie

Ronal Knox demeure célèbre pour ses sermons et pour sa traduction de la Bible en anglais à l'usage des catholiques.

En 1912, il publie dans le Oxford Blue Book un essai intitulé Études sur la littérature de Sherlock Holmes. Republié plus tard, en 1928-1929, dans un recueil intitulé Essays in Satire, cet essai constitue le point de départ officiel de ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler les « études holmésiennes ».

En effet, Knox y fait part successivement de diverses réflexions, qui lui sont venues à l'esprit en lisant les histoires de Sherlock Holmes. Il passe avec beaucoup de verve de l'une à l'autre de ces réflexions, mais si on les distingue bien les unes des autres, en les isolant, on obtient une série de thèmes, qui par la suite serviront de base à des controverses entre auteurs. Avec d'autres, non abordés par Knox, ces thèmes ont été regroupés sous le vocable des « études holmésiennes ». Aujourd'hui encore, les controverses portant sur ces points font les délices des clubs holmésiens.

Ronald Knox, lui-même auteur d'une demi-douzaine de romans policiers, a également codifié les « dix règles d'or du roman policier », connues sous le nom de « Décalogue de Knox ».

Il exerça une grande influence sur plusieurs écrivains britanniques eux-mêmes convertis au catholicisme : G. K. Chesterton, Evelyn Waugh, Siegfried Sassoon.
