Rothschild (et sa variante Rothchild) est un nom d'origine allemande. Initialement, il désignait une maison se distinguant par un signe rouge (en haut allemand rot : « rouge » et schild : « signe », « bouclier »), la référence la plus ancienne d'un tel nom remonte au XIIIe siècle. Il a souvent été le patronyme de juifs ashkénazes.

La famille Rothschild, la plus célèbre famille à porter ce nom, sont des descendants de Mayer Amschel Rothschild et ont fondé depuis le XVIe siècle des dynasties de banquiers et financiers dans différents pays européens aux origines juives ashkénazes et aux différentes nationalités (allemande, française, britannique, israélienne, etc.).

Les Rothschild se sont illustrés depuis le XVIe siècle, lorsque ce patronyme fut adopté par leur ancêtre Isaac Elchanan. Ils ont fait l'objet d'un grand nombre de théories du complot, qui reprennent systématiquement le thème du banquier juif.
