Royal Gold Medal

La Royal Gold Medal (de sa dénomination complète Royal Gold Medal for architecture) est une distinction décernée annuellement par le Royal Institute of British Architects sous le patronage du monarque britannique, en reconnaissance de la contribution substantielle d'un individu ou d'un groupe à l'architecture internationale.

Elle est décernée pour la première fois en 1848 à Charles Robert Cockerell et parmi ses lauréats se retrouvent nombre des architectes les plus connus des XIXe et XXe siècles, tels que Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1925), Frank Lloyd Wright (1941) et Le Corbusier (1953). En 1992, l'ingénieur en construction irlandais Peter Rice[1] devient le second ingénieur à recevoir cette distinction ; le premier est Ove Arup en 1966. Une autre exception notable est la médaille décernée à la ville de Barcelone en 1999[2].

Cette médaille récompense une œuvre dans son ensemble plutôt qu'un seul bâtiment ou un architecte alors médiatisé.
