L'Athenæum est un bâtiment érigé par Hadrien, une sorte d'université, utilisé pour les conférences et la formation à la rhétorique.

Il fut construit sous forme de théâtre ou d'amphithéâtre, surement composé d'une bibliothèque, et serait situé à côté de la Curie sur le Forum Romanum ou face au Temple d'Auguste dans le Vélabre. Il se peut même que l'Athenæum et la bibliothèque du Capitole ne fasse qu'un.

Au IVe siècle, avec son auditorium et sa bibliothèque (bibliothèque du Capitole ?), il devient la première université de la Rome antique. Une trentaine de professeurs assuraient des cours de rhétorique, de grec ancien, de grammaire, de philosophie, de droit et de lettres. Les élèves les plus pauvres se voyaient octroyer une bourse.
