Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (né le 5 septembre 1888 et mort le 17 avril 1975).

Né dans une famille de brahmane, il reçoit près de Madras une éducation occidentale dans un collège protestant. Professeur de philosophie à Mysore, puis à Calcutta, il est le premier indien nommé professeur à l'Université d'Oxford. Vice-chancelier de l'Université de Bénarès (1939-1948), chancelier de l'Université de Delhi. Représentant de l'Inde (1946-1949) et président du Conseil executif de l'UNESCO (1949). Il joue ensuite un rôle politique important : ambassadeur à Moscou,Vice-Président de l'Inde du 13 mai 1952 au 12 mai 1962, puis Président de l'Inde du 12 mai 1962 au 10 mai 1967.

Resté fidèle aux traditions philosophiques et religieuses de l' hindouisme, il souhaitait cependant que son pays adopte les valeurs occidentales d'innovation et d'efficacité technique. Il est également réputé comme historien de la philosophie indienne, représentatif du néo-védanta. En 1975 il reçoit le Prix Templeton.
