Naplouse ( نابلس en arabe; שכם en hébreu, prononcé Shechem ) est une importante cité de Cisjordanie avec plus de 300 000 habitants. Elle se situe à environ soixante-trois kilomètres au nord de Jérusalem. Ses habitants sont principalement des Palestiniens, mais on y trouve aussi environs 300 Samaritains. Le principal lieu saint de ceux-ci, le mont Garizim, surplombe en effet la ville.
La ville est proche de lieux saints musulmans, chrétiens, samaritains et juifs.
Histoire
La cité fut fondée en l'an 72 par les Romains et fut initialement nommée Flavia Neapolis (« nouvelle cité de l'empereur Flavius »), à environ deux kilomètres à l'est de la cité biblique de Sichem.
Après la conquête de la cité par les Arabes en 636, la cité fut rebaptisée نابلس (Nablus transcription phonétique de son ancien nom).
Les Croisés la renommeront « Naples » (le nom de la « Naples » italienne vient aussi d'une ancienne « Neapolis »). La cité devint un des centres majeurs du royaume de Jérusalem jusqu'à l'anéantissement de la ville par les Croisés en 1202.
La cité fut à nouveau relevée de ses ruines par les Arabes.
