Shirley Chisholm est une femme politique américaine née le 30 novembre 1924 à Brooklyn, New York et décédée le 1er janvier 2005 en Floride à 80 ans.
Elle représente New York au Congrès de 1969 à 1983. Elle est la première femme afro-américaine élue au Congrès (novembre 1968).
En 1972, Chisholm se porte candidate à l'investiture démocrate pour l'élection présidentielle. Elle obtient 152 voix lors de la convention mais est largement battue par George McGovern. Chisholm, femme, noire et de gauche savait que sa nomination était impossible mais avait décidé de lutter contre le statu quo[1].
