Ses nombreuses compositions et sa participation à des groupes majeurs de l'histoire du jazz font de Wayne Shorter l'un des plus importants musiciens de jazz issus des années 1960.

Biographie
Wayne Shorter commence sa carrière au saxophone ténor, faisant un passage de plusieurs années au sein des Jazz Messengers d'Art Blakey, dont il deviendra le directeur musical.
En 1964, il intègre le nouveau quintette de Miles Davis (trompette) avec Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (basse) et Tony Williams (batterie). Au sein de cette formation, Wayne Shorter deviendra vite l'auteur de la plupart des morceaux, avant de suivre Miles Davis dans l'aventure du jazz-rock (In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew), passant alors au saxophone soprano.
En parallèle, Wayne Shorter enregistre une dizaine de disques en tant que leader pendant les années 1960. En 1971, il quitte Miles Davis pour créer avec Joe Zawinul le groupe Weather Report (jazz-rock) où il restera 15 ans.
Après des collaborations diverses, puis une absence de quelques années suite au décès de sa femme (Accident du vol 800 de la TWA ; 1996), il reforme son propre groupe en 2000. Cette formation reprend les nombreuses compositions de son leader en les ré-inventant, et rencontre un important succès tant auprès des critiques que du public.
