Sita sings the blues (littéralement « Sita chante le blues ») est un film d'animation américain de Nina Paley réalisé en 2005. Il assemble récits de légende indienne (le Râmâyana), interludes musicaux et scènes de la propre vie de l'auteur.

Il est distribué sous une licence libre Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike, permettant la libre distribution, la copie et la modification[1]. Nina Paley renforce cette licence en interdisant explicitement l'usage de système Digital Restrictions Management (DRM)[2].

Synopsis

Ce film est une évocation du Rāmāyana, une légende indienne, sous forme de comédie musicale. Il raconte l'histoire de Sita, la femme de Rāma, prisonnière du démon Râvana.

Production

Ce film a été entièrement réalisé, scénarisé, animé et monté par Nina Paley. Le film est composé de saynètes, chacune dans quatre styles différents. La sortie du film au cinéma en France a rencontré des problèmes liées au respect du droit d'auteur pour certaines chansons de la bande sonore. Ces problemes de droits musicaux ont été réglés après de longues négociations. Le film est donc sorti le 12 août 2009, distribué sur copies neuves en 35 mm VOST par Eurozoom.

Récompenses

Le film a reçu le Cristal du long métrage (le premier prix) au Festival international du film d'animation d'Annecy en 2008 et un Ours de cristal « mention spéciale » au Festival de Berlin 2008. Sita Sings the Blues a également reçu de nombreuses récompenses dans les Festivals d'animation, un peu partout dans le monde.
