Le somali (Af Soomaali / الصوماليه en somali) est une langue appartenant au groupe des langues couchitiques de la famille des langues afro-asiatiques. Il est parlé dans toute la corne de l'Afrique, en Éthiopie, à Djibouti, en Somalie, et au nord-est du Kenya, par plusieurs millions de locuteurs, les Somalis. En Somalie, il est langue officielle aux côtés de l'arabe.

Écriture

Depuis 1972, à l'initiative du gouvernement somalien de Siad Barre, le somali est doté d'une transcription écrite selon l'alphabet latin. Il n'avait, auparavant, d'existence que sous la forme de l'alphabet arabe dans la partie nord de la corne d'Afrique.
