Le terme Sonderkommando se traduit par « Commando spécial » et se rattache aux crimes décidés et perpétrés par le régime nazi de deux manières :

  • les Einsatzgruppen SS, étaient constitués de Sonderkommandos et de Einsatzkommandos. Constitués d'officiers de la Gestapo, la Kriminalpolizei, le SD, et de Waffen-SS, ils participèrent en Europe de l'Est aux meurtres de masse (en particulier l'extermination des Juifs et des Tziganes), à l'exploitation des populations, à la répression des résistants et des partisans.
