Songs in the Key of Life (1976) est un album de Rhythm and blues-Soul de Stevie Wonder. C’est un des cinq albums marquants qu’il a réalisé au cours des années 1970. Il s'agit du dernier disque de sa « période classique » qui comprend également les albums Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, et Fulfillingness' First Finale. Cet opus est considéré par les critiques et les fans comme l'un de ses deux chef-d'œuvres avec Innervisions^[1]. Le magazine Rolling Stone a d'ailleurs placé l'album à la 56^e place de sa liste des « 500 meilleurs albums de tous les temps » en 2003^[2].

L’album a été diffusé initialement sous forme d’un double LP et d’un EP de quatre plages. Comme son nom l’indique, il traite de nombreux aspects de la vie : amour, relations entre personnes, problèmes sociaux et raciaux (Black Man, Pastime Paradise, Village Ghetto Land) et aspects spirituels (Have a Talk with God).

L’album contient plusieurs genres musicaux, en plus du Rhythm and blues-Pop-Rock qui étaient attendus, il a aussi un morceau de Jazz, Contusion avec la participation de Herbie Hancock. Sir Duke est en hommage à Duke Ellington.

Songs in the Key of Life a eu de nombreuses distinctions et a donné lieu à plusieurs hits. Ainsi, Stevie Wonder a reçu quatre Grammy Awards pour cet album en 1976 (meilleure performance vocale Pop masculine, meilleure performance vocale Rhythm and Blues masculine, album de l'année et producteur de l'année)^[3].
