Le Speed Art Museum, aussi surnommé The Speed [1] est le plus vieux et le plus grand musée d'art de l'État du Kentucky. Il est situé dans la ville de Louisville près du campus Belknap de l'université de Louisville.

Historique

Le musée ouvrit ses portes en 1927 et fut nommé en hommage à James Breckenridge Speed dont la femme Hattie Speed fit un don qui permit de lancer le musée. Elle spécifia que l'entrée devrait toujours rester gratuite. En 1997, le musée fut rénové et agrandi à hauteur de 12 millions de dollars. L'entrée est toujours gratuite bien qu'il soit de bon ton d'offrir un don de quatre dollars. Le musée accueille environ 180 000 visiteurs chaque année.

Collections

Le musée, construit dans un style néo-classique, abrite 12 000 objets d'arts dans sa collection permanente. Il s'agit d'art ancien, d'art classique et d'art moderne.
