La startup (ou start-up) (de l'anglais américain startup company, littéralement « société qui démarre »), en français jeune-pousse, est une entreprise en construction qui ne s'est pas encore lancée sur le marché commercial (ou seulement à titre expérimental). Elle est en phase plus ou moins longue de développement d'un produit, d'une idée, d'une étude de marché, etc., et de recherche de partenaires professionnels, techniques ou d'échec décuplés par rapport à des entreprises traditionnelles.

Historique

Ce terme est devenu populaire à la fin des années 1990 pendant la prolifération des dot-com (« point com » en français) où beaucoup de spéculations du marché boursier entouraient les petites startups liées aux technologies de l'information cherchant une entrée rapide en bourse et promettant de fabuleux profits potentiels. Beaucoup de ces startups ont démarré comme spin-offs (filiales) de groupes de recherche universitaires.

Depuis l'éclatement de la bulle Internet, le terme a beaucoup perdu de sa signification et est devenu presque un terme utilisé seulement par des internautes. Il semble toutefois que devant l'impopularité de l'expression française « jeune pousse », le terme start-up regagne du terrain.
