Stephen Vincent Benét

Stephen Vincent Benét (22 juillet 1898 - 13 mars 1943) était un auteur, un poète, un nouvelliste et un romancier américain. Il est surtout connu pour son poème narratif de la guerre civile américaine, John Browns' Body, publié en 1928. Il a gagné un prix Pulitzer pour cette œuvre en 1929.

Sa nouvelle littéraire intitulée Le diable et Daniel Webster a gagné un prix O. Henry, et il fournit le matériel pour un opéra en un seul acte de Douglas Moore.

Benét est issu d'une famille militaire de Bethlehem en Pennsylvanie de la vallée Lehigh. Il passa sa jeunesse à Benicia en Californie. À l'âge de dix ans, Benét est envoyé à l'académie militaire Hitchcock.

Diplômé de l'Académie d'Albany et de l'Université Yale, il reçut un prix Pulitzer posthume en 1944 pour Western Star, un poème narratif inachevé sur le peuplement de l'Amérique.

C'était un vers de la poésie de Benét qui donna à Dee Brown le titre de sa célèbre histoire de la destruction des tribus amérindiennes par l'État américain, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

Son frère, William Rose Benét (1886-1950) était un poète , un anthologiste et un critique littéraire qui est surtout connu pour son livre de référence The Reader's Cyclopedia.
