Le terme Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) désigne une famille de techniques avancées permettant de suivre en temps réel le parcours d’un véhicule.

L'histoire remonte même au milieu des années 1980, en Grande-Bretagne, chez Securicor, une société qui s'occupait de protéger les fourgons blindés utilisés pour les transports de fonds. Une série d'attaques mortelles avait engendré la nécessité d'une protection et d'une communication sécurisée, mais également le besoin de savoir à tout moment à quel endroit se trouvent précisément les transporteurs. Securicor mit donc en place l'AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location), un système de localisation très fiable, et surtout très bien protégé, utilisant les ondes hertziennes. Conçu par des ingénieurs de la Royal Navy, ce dispositif permet, au choix du client, de localiser un véhicule selon un rythme allant de 13 secondes à 28 minutes.

Ce système a traversé la Manche… Depuis 1996, la société Datatrak utilise ce procédé qui anéantit l'usage d'un brouilleur. «Comme notre système utilise de puissantes ondes émises par un réseau d'antennes très dense, il est inviolable par les brouilleurs», explique Pascal Zimmer, managing director de la société.
