Format tabloïd
Le format tabloïd correspond à la moitié des dimensions d’un journal traditionnel. Son format plié est de 41 cm x 29 cm environ.
Il est né en Grande-Bretagne. Pour des raisons de coût d'impression, de nombreux journaux traditionnels tels que The Independent et The Times, imprimés en grand format à l'origine, sont récemment passés au format tabloïd. Pour se distinguer des journaux dits populaires, ces derniers préfèrent parler d'édition compact.
En France, le format tabloïd a été longtemps réservé aux titres de la presse gratuite tels que Métro et 20 minutes. Mais de nombreux quotidiens, notamment régionaux, ont peu à peu adopté ce format pratique. C'est le cas de Charente libre, Libération, Havre Libre, La Montagne, Le Télégramme, La Nouvelle République du Centre Ouest et Paris-Normandie.
"Tabloïd" désigne aussi les premiers journaux à avoir utilisé ce format d'impression, à savoir les journaux à scandales (presse people).
