The Left Banke

The Left Banke était un groupe de musique pop créé en 1965 par des adolescents new-yorkais. Leur style était caractéristique : des chansons pop mélangées avec des orchestrations classiques, que Michael Brown (leur leader) considérait comme des « prolongements de chansons comme Yesterday ou Lady Jane ».

Le groupe se compose à l'origine de Michael Brown (claviers), George Cameron (guitare), Tom Finn (basse), Warren David (batterie) et Steve Martin Caro (chant). Son premier single, Walk Away Renée, sort fin 1966 chez Smash Records (filiale de Mercury) et rencontre un grand succès, confirmé par le single suivant, Pretty Ballerina, sorti début 1967. Les deux singles donnent leur titre au premier album du groupe, Walk Away Renée/Pretty Ballerina.

Des tensions éclatent entre Michael Brown et le reste du groupe : le premier sort un single sous le nom de Left Banke en employant des musiciens de studio, et les autres incitent leurs fans à le boycotter. Le groupe se réconcilie à la fin de l'année, mais la querelle a laissé des traces : les radios, échaudées, ne sont guère enclines à promouvoir leurs nouveaux singles. The Left Banke se disloque peu à peu après le départ de Browne fin 1967, malgré un second album, The Left Banke Too (1968) et des reformations sporadiques et infructueuses dans les années 1970.

Walk Away Renée, a été repris en français par Sylvie Vartan sous le titre Quand un amour renaît.
