De retour dans sa ville natale après vingt ans d'absence, Eugène Morgan assiste à un bal donné par le riche clan des Amberson. Il y retrouve son amour de jeunesse, Isabel, qu'il aime toujours. Sa fille Lucy tombe amoureuse de George, le fils d'Isabel, mais la splendeur des Amberson n'est plus qu'une apparence...

  • Le roman La Splendeur des Amberson de Booth Tarkington reçut le Prix Pulitzer du Roman en 1919.
  • En 2001, le réalisateur mexicain Alfonso Arau décide de mettre en scène un remake de La Splendeur des Amberson pour la télévision. Diffusé pour la première fois aux États-Unis le 13 janvier 2002, ce remake-téléfilm bénéficia sur le plan technique d'un budget de 16 millions dollars, et sur le plan artistique d'une reprise de la vision initiale de Orson Welles sur l'histoire avant les coupures des studios sur son film. Le casting fût constitué de Bruce Greenwood dans le rôle de Eugene Morgan, Madeleine Stowe pour Isabel Amberson, Gretchen Mol était Lucy Morgan, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers dans la peau de George Amberson, et Jennifer Tilly reprit le rôle de Fanny Minafer.
