The Monochrome Set était un groupe d'indie pop anglais formé à Londres en 1978.

Historique

Première époque : 1978-1985

Bid (de son vrai nom Ganesh Seshadri), Lester Square (de son vrai nom Thomas W.B. Hardy) et Andy (Andrew) Warren se rencontrent dans une Art School londonienne et jouent quelque temps aux côtés de Adam Ant dans un groupe nommé The B-Sides (qui deviendra par la suite Adam and the Ants), avant de fonder The Monochrome Set (nom qui signifie «Téléviseur en noir et blanc»).

Le groupe sortira quatre singles sur le label Rough Trade avant d'enregistrer leur premier album, le bien nommé Strange Boutique, pour le label DinDisc (une filiale de Virgin Records) en 1980. L'année suivante paraît Love Zombies toujours sur DinDisc.

Lester Square quitte le groupe après Eligible Bachelors, troisième album sorti en 1982 sur le label Cherry Red. Il sera remplacé par James Foster sur The Lost Weekend, quatrième et dernier album de cette première époque, qui sortira en 1985 sur le label WEA Records. Le single "Jacob's Ladder" extrait de cet album connaîtra un certain succès, mais le groupe se sépare peu après.

Reformation : 1990-1998

Bid, Lester Square et Andy Warren reforment le groupe en 1990. Les nouveaux venus sont le clavieriste Orson Presence et le batteur Mike Slocombe (rapidement remplacé par Trevor Ready). Les quatre derniers albums de cette période sont sortis sur le label Cherry Red.

Depuis 1998 Bid se consacre à un nouveau groupe nommé Scarlet's Well.

Réunion : 2008

Le groupe s'est réuni pour un concert unique le 8 octobre 2008 à Dingwalls, près de Londres, à l'occasion du trentième anniversaire du label Cherry Red, lequel coïncidait avec le propre anniversaire du Monochrome Set (trente ans également).

Bid, Lester Square et Andy Warren étaient cette fois accompagnés par Jennifer Denitto à la batterie et par Sian Dada (de Scarlet's Well) aux claviers et ont joué 13 titres.
